Mortal Kombat Movie Casts Three More Characters

Pre-production on the long-developing Mortal Kombat movie is now in full swing, having already cast a number of main roles such as the chosen one Liu Kang and the frosty one Sub-Zero. However, it looks like even more of the franchise’s fighters are joining the Fatality-flinging tournament following confirmation that Special Forces officer Sonya Blade and red-eyed scoundrel Kano have now been cast.

As revealed by THR, actress Jessica McNamee (The Meg) is in final negotiations to land the role of Sonya, while Australian actor Josh Lawson (House of Lies) is currently all set to play Kano; dashing previous reports of another actor‘s potential involvement. The outlet additionally confirms that martial arts-proficient actor Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2) is also in talks to join the film as an unspecified “lead character.”

The casting of Sonya Blade and Kano is sure to be a welcome addition in the Mortal Kombat movie, especially as the two characters’ blood feud has been one of the series’ most prominent staples since the very first game. Lewis Tan also appears to be a solid get, the actor starring in several action-packed projects like Into the Badlands and Netflix’s Wu Assassins. As for which MK character he might be playing, skilled fighters such as Scorpion or Kung Lao could easily fit the bill–though that’s just speculation at the end of the day.

The Mortal Kombat adaptation itself is looking to be shaping up pretty nicely as of late, with screenwriter Greg Russo providing semi-regular updates on the Simon McQuoid-directed movie’s road to principal production. Though the film has been confirmed to have a story separate from the games, the end product will nonetheless rely heavily on the popular fighting franchise, especially when it comes to R-rated violence.

The Mortal Kombat movie is set to release in theaters on March 5th, 2021.
