Netflix continues to dominate the streaming wars, and they are continuing their conquest by producing a plethora of successful original shows. Many of the planned programs are adaptations and continuations of classic properties, including Castlevania and Animaniacs. Last year, Netflix announced that they would be reviving the classic animated series Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Gina Rodriguez was previously announced as the voice of the protagonist in this new series, and it has been confirmed that Netflix will also be producing a live action Carmen Sandiego film also starring Rodriguez.

Deadline has reported that Netflix has obtained the live-action movie rights for the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? property. As such, the streaming service will be releasing a Netflix-exclusive live-action film based on the property in partnership with Gina Rodriguez’s production company, I Can and I Will Productions. Rodriguez will serve as producer on the project alongside Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser. The film will be a standalone adventure that Netflix likely intends to use to increase interest in their version of the Carmen Sandiego animated series. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, who own the Carmen Sandiego IP, have also planned a new series of Carmen Sandiego books that will release alongside the animated series.

While most people likely remember the franchise from the various television series throughout the years, the Carmen Sandiego character’s first appearances were in a series of educational computer games. As such, this would continue Netflix’s foray into adapting video game series for television, as they have done with Castlevania and will soon do with The Witcher. Hopefully, a faithful adaptation of the character does not elude Netflix, like Sandiego herself often does throughout the world.
