Legend of Zelda : Wind Waker 2 – The Reason for Cancellation
Everyone has their personal favorite, (and least favorite) Legend of Zelda game(s). This totally makes sense when you consider how different, yet similar each LoZ title is, from the artwork, down to the game mechanics. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was no different, and it makes the top of the list for some, and the bottom for others. Perhaps this is why it would come as no surprise that it was originally set to receive a sequel, which according to the former Art Director Satoru Takizawa, was actually scrapped in favour of Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
To tell you the truth, we had begun the initial steps towards creating Wind Waker 2 around that time. However, demand for a more Ocarina-like game was growing by the day. We did our very best with Wind Waker, and put everything we had into it…
Historically, the only direct sequel to any Legend of Zelda game on console is the odd partnership between Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, so right off the bat even the idea of a second Wind Waker is a total departure from Legend of Zelda “tradition”.
The concept of Wind Waker 2 faced many challenges as early as the drawing board. Takizawa also claimed that they wanted to go an entirely different direction with the game abandoning the seafaring focus that was the cornerstone of the original title.
Wind Waker 2 would have taken place in a more land-based setting, rather than on the sea, so that we could have Link gallop across the land on a horse. But Link’s proportions in Wind Waker weren’t very well suited for riding on horseback, he was too short, and an adult version of Toon Link did not seem appropriate either. So, while we were stuck on those problems, we became aware of the greater demand for a more realistic, taller Link.
It sounds like it might have been a good thing that we never got a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker 2, since Nintendo was struggling with the series identity after the original. Additionally, had the game ever been made, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to enjoy Twilight Princess, which set the precedent for later games like Skyward Sword and the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
