League of Legends Mobile Reportedly In Development

It appears that popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game League of Legends may be coming to a mobile device near you. Years ago, publisher Tencent approaching League of Legends developer Riot Games with a proposal to develop a mobile version of the game, which Riot Games rejected. In response, Tencent went ahead and developed Honour of Kings for China, which released in 2015 and quickly became the highest grossing MOBA mobile game.

In order to build off the success of Honour of Kings, Tencent developed an adaptation of the game called Arena of Valor, which released a few years ago. Unfortunately, Arena of Valor reportedly didn’t ‘click’ with the Western market, and it was considered a flop. Now, it appears that Tencent has gone back to the drawing board, this time seemingly with the support of Riot Games with the intent to create a mobile version of League of Legends.

According to Reuters, a source has revealed that Tencent and Riot Games have actually been working on League of Legends mobile for over a year now, though a separate source has stated that the game likely won’t be launching in 2019. The mobile version of the game apparently can’t come soon enough, as the game’s 1.4 billion revenue it pulled in last year was 21% less than the revenue from 2017. “League of Legends is not doing as well as it used to and so Riot badly needs a new way to monetise the game, especially considering that it is Riot’s only game,” said Amsterdam-based analyst Gu Tianyi. Given how tumultuous the times currently are over at Riot, it’ll be interesting to see how it affects the development of a mobile version of League.

League of Legends is now free to play for PC.
