The Last of Us 2: A Closer Look At Ellie’s Tattoo

This year’s PlayStation Experience event held by Sony ended with what some would say was the presentation’s biggest reveal, The Last of Us: Part 2 (LoU Part2). Since then, fans have been relentlessly examining every frame of the announcement trailer looking for the tiniest bits of info on the highly anticipated (although just recently announced) action-adventure horror survival game. The trailer features an even more battle worn grown up Ellie who takes on the role of the main protagonist in this latest entry. Naughty Dog, the developer behind the first game and its sequel, haven’t left fans of the franchise out in the cold as they continue to drop more and more details about the title. The latest info drop centers around Ellie’s tattoo.

Ellie's Tattoo The Last of Us: Part 2

It should come as no surprise that many cosplayers are already working on designing costumes with the likeness of this 19yr version of Ellie in mind, even down to the exact design of her tattoo, which creative director Neil Druckmann has graciously given fans a closer look at.

Upon closer examination, we can see that the tattoo features a nature motif which other than to cover up her bite marks might have some other metaphors at play as well. The tattoo was designed by tattoo artist Natalie Hall whose hands were scanned via some new technology which allowed them to be featured in announcement trailer during the close-up shots portion of Ellie playing guitar. After deciding on the design the developer went through one last test in which they applied the tat via a Sharpie to one of the project’s UI artist/designer Alexandria Neonakis as seen below.

There is no release date for LoU Part2 in sight, as the game is still rather early on in development but we will keep you posted as more is revealed. It’s going to be very interesting to see what role Joel plays in this installment being that there are already fan theories and speculation abounding throughout the internet.

What is your impression about this older and battle worn version of Ellie and do you think Joel is really there or is he just in her head? What do you think about Ellie’s tattoo?
