Square Enix has taken a strong turn in their diversification of gaming projects towards licensing pre-existing franchises in recent years. Their recent trilogy of Tomb Raider games have been highly praised as powerful deconstructions of Lara Croft, though their foray into the Marvel universe with their Marvel’s Avengers game has been met with middling success. Rumors had indicated recently that Square Enix would be publishing a Guardians of the Galaxy video game, and it seems this was indeed true. The new Guardians of the Galaxy reveal trailer has been released, as has a look at the gameplay and cinematics from the new game.

Square Enix has released the Guardians of the Galaxy reveal trailer that made its debut during the Square Enix E3 presentation on their official YouTube channel. The reveal trailer shows this version of the Guardians consisting of the same core lineup of Star Lord/Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon from the films. While they look slightly different from their movie counterparts, they do seem to have the same rapport as they did in the films. The trailer shows a variety of action and comical drama sequences, set to Bonnie Tyler’s song “I Need A Hero.” This would seem to suggest the game will feature licensed 1970s and 1980s songs, keeping Peter Quill’s fondness for classic tunes in tact.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy gameplay trailer was also revealed, showing player character Peter Quill in blastin’ and flyin’ action. While it seems that he will be the only member of the Guardians that players can play as, dialogue choice sections show that the players can influence the rest of the team to act per Peter’s directions. The combat sequences also show that Quill can slow down time, and work together with the Guardians to take down enemies and take advantage of each Guardian’s special skills. This game seems to be a much more focused take on a section of the Marvel universe than the Marvel’s Avengers game, and hopefully when it releases, it’ll have fans Hooked on a Feelin’ that they love this game.
