Grand Theft Auto VI Will Have A Female Protagonist, Says Report

Given how long video game development can take, and the amount of external factors that can delay a game’s release, many projects over the years have become elusive entities of legend for many fans. One such project that has almost risen to that level has been the hypothetical Grand Theft Auto VI. Fans have been hoping for the next core entry in the GTA series since 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V, only to be met with re-releases of V twice already for new generations of consoles instead. Now, a new report suggests not only is GTA VI in the works, but it will feature a female protagonist.

Rockstar Games female protagonist

Bloomberg has released a new report on Rockstar Games that largely focuses on the developer’s internal changes that have been made the past few years. Most of these changes seem to be related to the treatment of women, people of color and other minority groups both internally, as well as externally through the content of their games. The internal changes have included closing the gender pay gap and severely reducing the amount of crunch and overtime schedules mandated for employees. The changes imposed on their games have included the removal of insensitive material such as transphobic jokes and a “Cops n’ Crooks” mode from their games. What this article also reveals is an interesting tidbit about a future female protagonist:

Rockstar’s next game, Grand Theft Auto VI, will include a playable female protagonist for the first time, according to people familiar with the game. The woman, who is Latina, will be one of a pair of leading characters in a story influenced by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde, the people said.”

If this is indeed true, then this would be the first entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise to feature a female protagonist. Analysts have suggested that Grand Theft Auto VI could release some time between April 2023 and March 2024, though Bloomberg’s anonymous sources from inside Rockstar Games believe a release after this window seems more likely at this point. This would largely be due to complications from the pandemic, as well as Rockstar’s intent to no longer utilize crunch periods for their employees. Still, it will be nice to see a female protagonist in the GTA series finally get to rob banks and run over prostitutes with cars just as well as any male protagonist.
