Gotham Knights PS4, Xbox One Versions Cancelled
The newest generation of video game consoles has been made available for about a year and a half now at this point, and often it is this period of time that marks the true transition between console generations. Often when a new console gets released, the predecessor console in the same family is often still supported with game releases while the new device gains momentum. However, some games like the supposed 2023 iteration of Call of Duty are aiming to be released only on these next-gen consoles. Now, it appears that the Gotham Knights PS4 and Xbox One versions have been cancelled as well.
Warner Bros. shared a new press release with Polygon accompanying a new Gotham Knights gameplay trailer. The video shows off footage of players controlling Red Hood and Nightwing in various encounters with criminal enemies, proudly showcasing the unique combat styles of both successors to the game’s fallen Batman. However, the more substantial update disclosed by WB Games Montreal concerns the last-generation versions of Gotham Knights, or the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.
According to the press release, WB Games Montreal has decided to cancel the Gotham Knights PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. As they cite in the letter, the decision was made “to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.” This means that the game “will not be available for” last-gen hardware and only will only be available for those on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Series S.
Before being delayed, Gotham Knights was originally set to launch in 2021 but has now been scheduled for October 25th of this year. While this may disappoint owners of the older consoles, it could be understood that the technical requirements of this game may be too much for the PS4 and Xbox One to handle. We all know how much they’d probably like to avoid having a Cyberpunk 2077 situation on their hands.
