Fortnite Star Wars Event Debuts Lightsabers, 'Rise of Skywalker' Clip (VIDEO)

Fortnite is as popular as ever these days, battle royale title playing host to quite a few notable crossovers in recent memory such as with John Wick, Borderlands, as well as a particularly legendary collaboration with Marvel Studios’ Avengers. The most recent collision of franchises has brought upcoming Star Wars film The Rise of Skywalker to the Fortnite island, having debuted a bevy of new content as part of the epic space-themed event.

As foretold by Epic Games last week, the proceedings were set to be christened by the debut of a new clip from the big Hollywood movie, but a bit more actually took place when the countdown reached zero. For starters, a holographic Geoff Keighley and the movie’s director J.J. Abrams showed up to the party in the Millenium Falcon, promoting the crossover through the guise of their own inexplicable in-game skins. The twosome’s appearance came with no shortage of enthusiastic banter and random emotes, all culminating when J.J. performed a glorious Naruto run to make his exit from the stage.

The event eventually shifted toward showing the new Rise of Skywalker scene, depicting the film’s protagonists Rey, Finn, and Poe making their way through a sinister compound. While the clip wasn’t the longest, it did set the stage for the remainder of the Fortnite Star Wars event, which saw Emperor Palpatine invade the map with a foreboding quote about “revenge” and how “the day of the Sith” will soon return. As the gathering neared its end, fans were finally given access to a mysterious chest positioned on the stage, which, upon opening, gifted players with their own battle-ready lightsaber.

While a welcome addition, the grand debut of lightsabers wasn’t exactly a surprise, a leak (via Prima Games) revealing details regarding the elegant weapon several days beforehand. The leak has largely proven to be true, with red, green, blue, and Mace Windu purple lightsabers now available as Mythic-rarity weapons in-game. A new trailer also confirms First Order blasters as available during the event along with skins for Rey, Finn, Stormtroopers, and red Royal Guard troopers. The footage concludes with an additional reveal of Kylo Ren, teasing the masked character’s arrival will also be on the way.

Fortnite is out now for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
