Final Fantasy XIV Live-Action TV Series In Development From Sony, Square Enix

With the Final Fantasy XIV expansion Shadowbringers on the cusp of being released, fans of the long-running MMORPG have already begun to wonder what’s next for the world of Eorzea. Not one to simply take baby steps, it looks like the next big thing will be a live-action Final Fantasy television series that takes place in the world of FFXIV.

The news comes by way of The Hollywood Reporter, which confirmed that Sony Pictures Television, Square Enix, and production company Hivemind will be bringing Final Fantasy to the small screen. The folks over at Hivemind are currently working on Netflix’s The Witcher series, while also producing The Expanse for Amazon. According to THR, Jason F. Brown (The Expanse), Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani (Sony Pictures’ upcoming Bloodshot) will produce the series for Hivemind, with Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton working as both executive producers and writers for the show.

Not much is currently known about the plot for the show, other than the news that it will explore “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict.” Given that the show will be set in Eorzea, this could mean that the Garlean empire may be heavily featured given their penchant for technology and warmongering. That said, the story is supposed to be an original one, so we’ll just have to wait and see. The important thing to note is that the series will feature all your mainstay staples of a Final Fantasy game: chocobos, annoying moogles, and likely a whole lot of characters with radical hairstyles. It is also anyone’s guess who will be cast in the show, but we at the very least know that Tom Holland would totally be on board since he wishes to “become the darkness.”
