Elden Ring Gameplay Will Be Heavily Based On Dark Souls, Says Director
Long time Dark Souls series fans were absolutely thrilled when From Software revealed the first trailer for Elden Ring, a collaborative effort between the studio and famed author George R.R. Martin. With cinematic elements very clearly pulled from the overarching Dark Souls series, fans immediately began to wonder just how much Elden Ring would take from the Souls games, and how it would look as a whole with George R.R. Martin being responsible for the game’s ‘overarching mythos.’ Now, it has been revealed that much of the game will play just like Dark Souls, though Elden Ring’s combat system won’t just be a copy paste job.
From Software head Hidetaka Miyazaki recently sat down with the folks at IGN to discuss Elden Ring, during which he revealed that the game would be an open-world title, with gameplay based off the time tested framework from the Dark Souls series. There will, of course, be differences. “Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG with a fantasy setting. Gameplay-wise, it’s heavily based on Dark Souls,” Miyazaki said.
However, that doesn’t mean that it plays out in the same way. With a more open and vast environment, the way combat plays out becomes fundamentally different.”
This will likely play out most obviously when horseback riding gets involved, which Miyazaki mentions at another point in the same interview. The important thing to note here is that Dark Souls junkies will absolutely be able to get their fix with Elden Ring; it will just be interesting to see how much of the game is pulled from Dark Souls, and how much of it will be fresh for those that have wearily trudged through all that has come before.
Elden Ring is now in development.
