It would appear that David Brevik has been keeping himself busy for the past year. The Diablo creator has recently revealed that his new game, which looks to be a wonderful blend of the now 22-year-old dungeon crawler and Terreria. Now that Marvel Heroes has met an unfortunate fate, Brevik has had more time to focus on his upcoming RPG, It Lurks Below.

Pixelated goodness is abound in It Lurks Below, and to top it off, the Diablo creator did it all by himself. It will feature the building aspect that has been popularized by the likes of Minecraft and Terraria, but when speaking with Polygon, Brevik made it known that he wanted it to be much more than that. “I wanted to make an RPG, with classes and leveling up, random items, where you get more and more powerful as you go down into the core of the world and fight baddies,” he said. Here are a few screenshots to give you an idea of what to look forward to:

He goes on to say that It Lurks Below will be a roguelike that mixes what he likes to play with some of the stuff he’s created in the past. As stated above, he did create all of the art himself, saying, “That was the most difficult thing for me, because I’m not much of an artist. It’s definitely got a pixel retro kind of feel to it … I’ve tried to make it as dark and creepy as I can … creepy atmosphere and lighting.” He said that the title’s art “took me the longest amount of time, but as I’ve gone along, I’ve gotten better and better at pixel art and animations.”

The Diablo creator appears to be going all-in on the upcoming RPG, saying that he intends on being the sole developer after the game releases. “I am going to be adding stuff to [It Lurks Below], listening to the community, getting feedback and making sure the game is the best it can be. That is something I definitely worked hard on with Marvel Heroes, getting that feedback from the community,” he said.

It Lurks Below is expected to arrive on Steam at some point this year. Brevik plans to stream the game this weekend on his Twitch channel, which you can watch below. Keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as this story develops, and for other gaming goodness, check out the following:
