“Deus Ex Is Not Dead,” Says Eidos Montreal’s David Anfossi

Deus Ex

It’s been two years since the most recent installment in the Deus Ex franchise was released, and the fate of the series has been left hanging in the balance. The title was received that well from gamers, which led to many believing it might be over with. This was especially true with Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the horizon.

While the focus of Eidos Montreal may currently be placed on the darker side of Lara Croft’s tale, the studio head recently clarified the state of the Deus Ex franchise. “Deus Ex is not dead, I confirm that,” David Anfossi said in an interview. Straight to the point, right? Luckily, he did elaborate, saying:

Deus Ex, of course, it’s the brand of the studio. We are all attached to this franchise, but we cannot do everything, you know? So we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we have this co-development with Crystal [Dynamics] on The Avengers, and we have a third game in development, so it’s enough at the moment for us.”

Rumors have been circling around that mysterious third game that Eidos Montreal is working on. Rumors point to it being another Marvel title, and it might possibly be based on the Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, Anfossi did state what that title is not:

So I should be clear with Thief, in the sense that for the moment there is no plans around that franchise. You know we have three productions and developments here. We are a big studio, but we have… we like to focus on things we do and do it correctly. We’ve proven it, I believe. So for Thief there is no plan.”

No Thief in the works, Deus Ex isn’t dead, The Avengers, a possible Guardians of the Galaxy title, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider is just around the corner. Sounds like Eidos Montreal has their hands full, but it will be interesting to see what they have planned for the future.
