Darksiders 3 Devs Respond To Mixed Reviews
After six whole years, Gunfire Games brought Darksiders 3, the latest entry into the classic hack and slash adventure series. Centered around one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Fury, her sole mission is to bring down the deadly sins that threaten to take over Earth. Fans of the original games were looking forward to the sequel, but once the reviews came out, there was a noticeable mixed reception from fans and critics alike.
Despite Gunfire Games’ goal to amp up the experiences fans remembered from the original games, it seemed not all were on board with their end goal to stick with the old-school motto of gaming. On one hand, Metacritic handed Darksiders 3 a moderate 64% for PlayStation and a better score for its PC counter part at 72%, while IGN offered a 7 out of 10. In response to that, THQ Nordic CEO Lars Wingefors wanted to make clear that they’re proud of the game they’ve released for the Darksiders franchise. Wingefors told GamesIndustry.biz:
The promise we made was to deliver a game to the fans of the franchise, and I’m really proud of it. I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to show you, I think [developer] Gunfire has made an excellent game, and even my publishing team in Vienna has been working really hard to execute on this — all the marketing, all the behind-the-scenes things. Everything around publishing the Apocalypse Edition has been a logistics challenge. A lot of people have spent a lot of time over the past few months to make this happen.”
In response to the mixed reception of Darksiders 3, he said:
There are always a few people not enjoying this kind of product, but there are also people really enjoying it. If we stick to our promise and deliver a product that the fans really enjoy, I think we’ll be [fine].”
In other words, for true fans of the franchise, THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games delivered on what they promised to the community that has stood by them. Not everyone will enjoy it, but they certainly brought the characteristic gameplay style the series is known for. This time with updated graphics and the fight and fury of, well, Fury. In a gaming industry fighting to deliver on endless demands, Darksiders 3 offers a break from busy-bodied titles with gameplay that exemplified the time it was conceived.
