Dark Souls Series “Finished,” From Software Aims To Create “Fresh” Experiences

Dark Souls Series "Finished," From Software Aims To Create "Fresh" Experiences

Many gamers still consider From Software’s Dark Souls series to be one of their favorite franchises, though even said gamers must admit that the Souls games, at least in their original forms, have been rather played out over the years. With Dark Souls recently getting remasters, re-releases, and trilogy sets, even developer studio From Software has admitted that it is time for a change, one that it is fully embracing with the upcoming release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

In a recent interview with VG247, From Software communication and promotion manager Yasuhiro Kitao discussed the direction the studio is heading in, confirming that they are focused moreso on making different games, as opposed to more Dark Souls rehashes. “We plan to make a variety of different titles and fresh experiences,” Kitao said.

But as far as Miyazaki has said in interviews previously, the Dark Souls series is finished. That said, we do want to keep creating these fresh experiences, and just games we want to make – so please stay tuned.”

Despite what Kitao said, Miyazaki has previously also gone on record to state that the Dark Souls series was simply “taking a break,” rather than being completely finished. It will likely depend on how well Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice fares once it releases early next year. If the game isn’t critically received, we may yet see a Dark Souls 4 in our future.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice releases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 22nd, 2019.
