Critical Role continues to be a fantastical reprieve from the chaos of real life for Dungeons and Dragons fans. If you were a fan of the Vox Machina Origins graphic novel series, the crew just announced a brand new one to grace the shelves next year. Titled The Mighty Nein Origins, the series begins with two new books and directs attention to characters Jester Lavorre and Caleb Widogast respectively. Check out the cover illustration below:

In collaboration with Dark Horse Comics, the hardcover graphic novel series, The Mighty Nein Origins, explores the backstory of each adventurer of the Mighty Nein. Coming June 16th, 2021, the first volume introduces Jester Lavorre – the popular tiefling cleric.

According to the official announcement: “Jester Lavorre had an unconventional upbringing, even for one born in cosmopolitan Nicodranas. Daughter of the famed Ruby of the Sea, she had many opportunities for mischief as a small child, of which she took full advantage! Dive into the mystery of Jester’s early years, her first meeting with the Traveler, and the fateful events that set her on a path to eventually join the Mighty Nein.”

Jester’s volume was written by Sam Maggs, colored by Cathy Le, line art by Hunter Severn Bonyun, and directed with Critical Role’s Laura Bailey and Matthew Mercer.

The second volume is set to release on July 14th, 2021, featuring Caleb Widogast. The official synopsis reads: “In The Mighty Nein Origins: Caleb Widogast, Bren Aldric Ermendrud is chosen to attend the exclusive Soltryce Academy, preparing for an important future in service to the Empire. But nobody––least of all Bren himself––can foresee the cruelty he will endure, and the ways in which it will break and remake him. Witness the events that transform Bren into the Mighty Nein’s Caleb Widogast, and how they inform the path he’ll take in the future.”

Caleb’s volume, on the other hand, was written by Jody Houser, colored by Diana Sousa, line art by Selina Espiritu, and directed by Critical Role’s Liam O’Brien and Matthew Mercer.

Pre-orders are available now through online retailers like Amazon, TFAW, and Barnes and Nobles. Digital versions are available via Dark Horse Digital, ComiXology, and other vendors to be announced in the future.
