God of War Director Cory Barlog Watched Private Gameplay Of Death Stranding

Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima loves to keep things close to the vest. While we saw some gorgeous footage at E3 and the auteur has revealed some of the characters, we still know very little about Death Stranding. Even PlayStation’s description of the game lacks clarity. Kojima previously explained why he is keeping his next title such a secret. But that doesn’t mean that no outsiders have seen extended portions of the game.

Cory Barlog, director of God of War, confirmed that he watched private gameplay of Death Stranding. On Twitter, Barlog sent Kojima a congratulatory tweet about his studio’s third anniversary. Like the rest of us, Barlog is giddy with anticipation for the legendary director’s next title.

Just over an hour later, someone asked Barlog if he’d seen a private gameplay of Death Stranding. He responded immediately and in the affirmative.

Oh, to be a fly on that wall.

Barlog doesn’t have the reputation of Kojima—does anyone?—but God of War has made him one of 2018’s biggest names in gaming. It would have been interesting to see Death Stranding and God of War go head to head for GOTY honors. Interestingly the two directors have also had similar careers of late. Kojima almost retired following his ugly separation with Capcom. Barlog nearly gave up on God of War many times. The former is now crafting his most ambitious game ever, while the latter’s hard work created the likely favorite for 2018’s Game of the Year. Balrog is also currently working on his own magnum opus, a game that some believe will surpass God of War. Despite some rough patches, this pair of immensely talented creators should continue to push the limits of gaming for the foreseeable future.

Death Stranding does not have an official release date yet, but the game will almost certainly be available exclusively on the PlayStation 4. That also isn’t official, but Kojima Industries is currently a Sony exclusive company. Something drastic would have to occur between now and the launch for that to change. For what it’s worth, Norman Reedus, who stars as the game’s protagonist, gave his own launch date predictions earlier this month.

We will keep you up to speed on all of the game’s updates as they happen. To make sure you don’t miss a single one, follow DFTG on Facebook and Twitter!
