Civilization V Mod Adds Super Artificial Intelligence That Can Go Rogue

Super-intelligent artificial intelligence – in theory, it’s a risk that has its rewards, but it can be a perilous journey if left unchecked. The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at the University of Cambridge has developed a Civilization V mod that adds super AI, which can potentially wipe out humanity. This is a cut above the rest when it comes to the potential functions of AI in the human world. It’s much safer than testing it in the real-world that’s for sure.

The Civilization V mod adds a plethora of AI technologies to the game based on a tech “skill tree” players can choose to branch out however they please. However, with each progressive step toward advancements in technology is a closer one to the dangers that super AI can wield. Depending on the measures taken in-game, players can continue with a paradise that practically runs itself or an instant loss. Here’s the official description from developer Shai Shapira:

Add the element of artificial intelligence research to the game. Artificial intelligence can initially provide some benefits, and eventually can turn into superintelligence that brings mastery of science to its discoverer. However, if too much artificial intelligence research goes uncontrolled, rogue superintelligence can destroy humanity and bring an instant loss of the game.”

There are two versions of this mod available for download via the Steam Workshop. For those with the basic version of the game, head on over to this page. Meanwhile, players with versions that host Gods and Kings and the Brave New World DLC, go here. And since it affects late gameplay, Shai Shapira recommends starting in the modern era to see how it functions. As seen in the image gallery above, there are several different “endings” to be had as well.

This is certainly an interesting addition to the game, and adds onto the notion that this may very well occur in real-life. What do you think of CSER adding this sort of mod to the game?
