Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Features Branching Dialogue Options
Many of the more modern Call of Duty titles maintained a focus on the fast-paced action gameplay the franchise is known for. However the upcoming title, Modern Warfare aims to dial things back by bringing players a dark and gritty tactical shooter style game filled with choices to be made and consequences to be had. This will boil right down to the dialogue found within the game, giving players branching voice lines based on the actions they take throughout the campaign.
While in a recent interview, campaign director Jacob Minkoff explains that the team at Treyarch intends to put a little weight behind the players’ actions. An example given was a mission that was shown back in May where players are tasked with infiltrating a British townhouse eliminating terrorists who have occupied the location. Players will then need to figure out who is a terrorist and who is a civilian before firing, one instance, in particular, shows a woman holding a baby. It goes without saying that shooting the baby is discouraged, but if the horrendous act does occur the players will be forced to suffer the consequences.
If you comport yourself in a way not befitting a soldier, the game will fail you. But if you’re doing your job? The game will try to figure out if you shot that baby on purpose or accidentally. We have a lot of heuristics running behind the scenes to try to determine: Are you a freaking psycho who’s just shooting everything? Fine. But if you’re really trying to do your job and you’re just like, ‘Oh God damn it, I made a mistake and I feel really bad about that,’ we want you to feel that. We want you to really sit with that.”
On top of making some of these incredibly harrowing choices, players will be forced to live them down as NPCs will comment on them as time goes on. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be linear as is the standard for titles in the franchise but with the changing dialogue, the game is sure to give players a different perspective on each mission they undertake.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare is set to launch on October 25th of this year for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
