Call Of Duty Movie Won’t Be Created If The “Story Isn’t Right,” Says Activision
Striking a balance is hard when adapting a franchise from one medium to another, and it’s certainly the challenge with a Call of Duty movie. Though this isn’t the first video game to receive a live-action adaptation, it looks as though the franchise developers aren’t eager to throw out a movie under the name just for the sake of it.
Activision executive, Tom Kilpin, spoke to MCV on the chances of a film continuing production, but it turns out if the “story isn’t right”, it may very well not happen at all. As long-standing as the Call of Duty franchise is, catering to the fanbase is important for its longevity. Kilpin elaborates:
Anytime you take a franchise as storied as this, with this kind of legacy, and expand it into a new form factor you have to be really careful. So frankly, if the script and the story isn’t right we won’t do it; it’s not one of those situations where someone is saying, ‘I don’t care just get it made!’; that’s not what’s happening. We do think that if it’s done well it has the opportunity to expand the base audience, beyond the traditional foundation that the game appeals to.”
It’s a good opportunity to freshen up the Call of Duty name, especially since the successful launch and rekindled interest with Call of Duty WWII. When asked about expansion, “As an M-rated game, it’s a core audience and we do think there’s an opportunity to reach a little more broadly than that; if the storytelling is done well, that’s the key.”
Furthermore, even though the core audience of CoD is catered to an M-rated audience, Activision hopes to expand the demographic with the film’s production. “As an M-rated game, it’s a core audience and we do think there’s an opportunity to reach a little more broadly than that,” said Kilpin. “If the storytelling is done well, that’s they key.”
With that being said, do you have hope for a Call of Duty movie? As a fan of the franchise, what do you think of Kilpin’s words?
