Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Disc Unplayable Without Release Day Update

Black Ops 4

While Black Ops 4 isn’t available until October 12th, it seems a fan may have gotten their hands on an early copy of the latest title from the Call of Duty franchise. That may be exciting news, however, it would appear that most, if not all, of the features of the game are unplayable without the “day-one” update. According to VG247, someone on Twitter shared a screen capture of the error letting fans know the update is required. The account in question has since been suspended, with the remains of the tweet seen below:

Black Ops 4 isn’t the first Call of Duty title to need a release day update in order to access game features. WWII needed an update to access the multiplayer features of the game. Players could still enjoy the solo missions that were available, however, Black Ops 4 is much more reliant on aspects that are multiplayer. While a few features like Zombies and Specialist missions might be available, players can’t just dive in without the update.

Digital users will obviously get the update the day they download their game, however, those who have physical copies of Black Ops 4 should keep in mind that an internet connection will be required initially. While this may not be an issue for most players, those who don’t have a consistent or reliable connection will likely have to wait longer to enjoy all of the features of the game.

Treyarch hasn’t mentioned any details surrounding the update, or the size of the file. Players could expect anything from a simple file to activate the game or a larger one that addresses any problems missed before release. With the game’s already massive demand for 100GB of space, adding on an update might mean some players will be cleaning out their hard drives. We’ll know for sure on October 12th when Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
