Report: BioWare’s Anthem Delayed As Studio Feels Pressure To Make Things Right

Anthem Delayed

Sci-fi gaming fans have been rather hesitant about getting hyped for BioWare’s upcoming title. Having been somewhat burned by last year’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and the stumbles it endured before being announced that the game was being suspended, gamers are trying to be optimistic about the future. However, sources are reporting that with BioWare’s Anthem delayed, it’s likely due to the pressure currently being felt to make a title that truly delivers.

Speaking with Kotaku, an unnamed source has attributed the whole Anthem delayed situation to the lackluster response Andromeda was faced with last year. Another reasoning behind the postponement is the work that is being carried out on the next Dragon Age title. While Anthem was initially revealed to be arriving at some point this year, it looks like that may have changed and the game is now headed for a 2019 launch. Here’s what was said:

The “fall 2018” window mentioned during that E3 announcement was “never realistic,” one source said. Exact dates remain in flux—and Anthem’s developers must also plan for a beta release, an EA Access launch, and an ongoing schedule of patches and updates—but it appears unlikely to developers that publisher EA will allow BioWare to delay the game any further than March 2019, when the company’s 2019 fiscal year comes to an end. (EA, like most publicly traded companies, uses the fiscal calendar as a basis for all of its decisions, as those dates determine how investors will behave.)”

There’s no denying that all eyes are on BioWare and how they handle the forthcoming game. It could very well be a make-or-break situation that leads to huge shake-ups moving forward. We’ve already seen EA take over BioWare Montreal after the Andromeda fiasco, so what would stop them from completely liquidating one of the best RPG developers in the business? Only time will tell, but as is pointed out in the report, “the stakes feel higher than they ever have.”

Who knows, maybe the return of Casey Hudson will prove to be what was necessary. Needless to say, quite a bit hangs in the balance moving forward. With Anthem delayed, it does provide BioWare with an abundance of time to get everything right, but it also gives EA ample opportunity to make some unfavorable decisions.
