AT&T And Comcast Lift Data Restrictions Due To Coronavirus

AT&T

While COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the globe there has been a ton of cancellations of live-events, postponed productions, and many gaming functions and studios moving to remote operation. As more and more people seclude themselves at home, some service providers such as AT&T and Comcast are rising up to help make life a little easier for users.

Internet Service Providers haven’t been seen in the best light, using different data caps to bring about new packages purely for the sake of profit. Thankfully, the global issues surrounding COVID-19 have spurred some of these companies into action. A recent post details an announcement from AT&T stating that the company will be suspending data caps and waiving any fees that customers might accrue from the additional data usage for at least the next 60 days. Specifically, the company pledged to:

  • Not terminate the service of any wireless, home phone or broadband residential or small business customer because of their inability to pay their bill due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Waive any late payment fees that any wireless, home phone or broadband residential or small business customer may incur because of economic hardship related to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Keep our public Wi-Fi hotspots open for any American who needs them.

Comcast is also joining in, though, not only by dropping their data caps. The company is offering free broadband services to low-income households as well as increasing internet speeds with a new Internet Essentials program. The internet service provider has also opened up their Xfinity hotspots for general public use in an effort to respond to the growing need to “work from home” and access educational services. In addition, Comcast has also put a pause on data caps and late fees and disconnects will be suspended for the next 60 days. A map of available free hotspots can be viewed on the official Xfinity website.

While the COVID-19 outbreak is putting the squeeze on many people, it is nice to see major companies extending a helping hand to those who need it.
