Activision Teases the Possibility of a New Crash Bandicoot Game

With the release of the N. Sane Trilogy on PlayStation 4, fans have been treated to the nostalgia of remastered versions of their old favorites. The games have been seeing stellar sales overseas in the UK and Australia for example, making number one in charts on its first week. With a passionate fanbase emerging once more, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg had some exciting, but reluctant things to say about the possibility of a new Crash Bandicoot game.

In a recent interview with Game Industry Biz, Hirshberg noted that Activision was testing the waters with the franchise. The CEO isn’t certain that there is enough appeal to justify a new Crash Bandicoot game, or if the surge of interest is due to the dedication of fans in a smaller market. Here’s what he had to say:

We know there’s a vocal fanbase that wanted that to come back, but you never know if that is emblematic of a larger audience or just this niche, nostalgia-based community. So far, we are seeing some real passion for it, so that could lead to other things.

Of course, we are always trying to find the next big thing, but our first priority is to make sure we are servicing the communities that we are already lucky enough to have.”

It makes sense that the company would be reluctant to dive into a new Crash Bandicoot game. A lot of time and money goes into development and reviving a franchise and with a main console game not having been released since 2008 a “wait and see” strategy isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, it will be up to fans to show that the game is loved enough to deserve a new title.
