Mortal Kombat 11 Review Bombed, Accused of “SJW,” “Racist” Ending (VIDEO)
Following months of teasing and no shortage of hype-worthy showcases, Mortal Kombat 11 has finally made it to release, the fighting game chaining together a kombo of positive reviews from many gaming outlets. However, it seems not everyone is a fan on the game over on Metacritic, the review-aggregation website amassing numerous negative reviews and citing an over-reliance on SJW “political propaganda” and accusations of “pay-to-win” microtransactions.
As of now, Mortal Kombat 11’s user score currently sits at 2.9 out of a possible 10, a far cry from its professional critic score of 83/100. The vast majority of these 300+ negative reviews award the game with a “1” or a flat zero rating, indicating an intent to review-bomb the newly-released title into oblivion. Some users have obvious gripes such as lacking a certain fighter or the game’s unavailability in certain regions, but most reviews are using this platform to rant about a perceived “political agenda” or “predatory monetization.”
On the topic of “SJW propaganda,” most of the complaints seem to be referring to the game’s extended focus on female characters, or, more specifically, their lacking of a scantily clad design this time around. Another source of this criticism was the character Jackson “Jax” Briggs and his ending in the game’s Towers mode, riling up these review-bombers for the scene’s “politically correct” and “racist” storytelling.
Spoilers below.
Upon reaching the end of his particular challenge mode, Jax is granted the ability to alter time how he sees fit, the metal-armed officer opting to erase slavery from the Earth and stop it from ever happening. While this would appear to be a just be Jax performing a noble act on behalf of the African-American community, a number of negative posters are calling out this specific scene in their reviews, citing an overt “reverse racism.”
End of spoilers.
As the game also features an infamously unforgiving means of earning the in-game currency necessary for cosmetics, players have additionally surmised an intent by NetherRealm to encourage use of microtransactions. This grind may not be the big deal it would be in past games (cosmetics aren’t tied to character progression anymore), but it would still seem to present a real problem when tackling Tower and Krypt modes; challenges intended solely for unlocking extra material.
The difference between this and any so-called “SJW” complaints is that NetherRealm seem to be taking the former pretty seriously, having already announced plans to re-balance the way the game doles out currency for these instances. Creative Director Ed Boon himself addressed the modes’ difficulty, assuring players that earning future reconfigured loot will “be more like HOURS than days.”
