To say the world of Elder Scrolls is rich in lore and as vast as a game can get would be an understatement. Simply put, it is. The same goes for Skyrim, likely one of the most replayable iterations of the ESO series from Bethesda and world famous for all aforementioned features. From the still thriving mod community and fanbase to boot, it’s no wonder the studio continues to pump out a new port for Skyrim, the latest of which was released for the Nintendo Switch. Despite its shelf life existence tracing back to 2011, there’s still so much more to discover and thank to one fan, you don’t need to put in the work to find them.

Thanks to one dedicated a fellow Elder Scrolls enthusiast and video producer at Polygon, Brian D. Gilbert endured the task no one else had the devotion to, which was to read all 337 books of Skyrim and break it down from his top and least favorites. It’s significant to note that this quest doesn’t include journals or diaries. As Gilbert puts it, “Everyone knows that self-published doesn’t count.” Ouch. Totaling 571 pages in 5.5 size font, Gilbert read over 316,000 words of both mind-numbingly boring bits of text on absolutely riveting meetings, and some surprisingly entertaining works of fiction. The video producer broke all 337 books down into seven separate categories: historical, instructional, academic, mythical, dramatic, “eh” (AKA “medieval fantasy op-eds”) and good fiction. The latter category is a poignant composition of 59 books Gilbert highly recommends.
