Fallout 76: Calling It A Survival Game Is Not Accurate, Says Bethesda

Fallout 76

When Bethesda announced Fallout 76, fans were divided about the concept. With the introduction of online play, many feared they would be tossed into a full-on MMO and would be robbed of any enjoyable RPG elements the franchise is well known for. With the pile on of various articles, the pre-E3 showcase, and more stating that the game would be a survival title like Rust and thus unenjoyable, fan opinion was pretty much doomed.

Of course, this isn’t true of Fallout 76 as fans are slowly discovering. Regardless of what is out there, however, there is still fear of griefing from players and the idea of nuking your friends has some fans out completely. Todd Howard sat down with The Guardian recently to set the story straight, stating exactly why a category like “survival” is inaccurate:

We avoid the word ‘survival’, because people’s minds immediately go to DayZ and Rust and certain other games, and those comparisons are not really accurate for what we’re doing. If you think about the survival modes we’ve made in Fallout 4, it has that vibe… Fallout 76, although it’s an online game, when I play it, I mostly still play it solo. We like those experiences as much as our fans do.”

The concept of playing with strangers also might put some players in a position of feeling as if it might not be worth it. OP players may push newer and weaker players off the server with griefing (a common experience in ARK Survival), however, Howard says this isn’t the case either. In the interview, he assures fans that Bethesda believes this is no fun at all, and there won’t be any loss of progression due to death.

Of course, players can just create an experience with friends in a server all their own, enjoying the game without having to contend with unknown enemies. Further, the solo experience is alive in Fallout 76 and players can just as easily enjoy the title on their own. While Bethesda has pushed boundaries here, it appears they have definitely kept their fanbase in mind as they developed this title.

Fallout 76 releases November 14th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as we learn more about the upcoming title, and for other gaming goodness going on right now, check out the following:
