Jim Carrey In Talks To Portray Dr. Robotnik In Sonic the Hedgehog Movie
While the intention that many of the big movie studios producing film adaptations of popular video games is to attract a large audience of existing fans, most big video game movies tend to look for a big name star for their films to entice viewers unfamiliar with the source material. Michael Fassbender portrayed the lead role in the Assassin’s Creed film and Ryan Reynolds was cast for the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie. Now, it appears that Paramount Pictures is looking to utilize a bankable movie star for the villainous role of Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and their sights are set on none other than Jim Carrey.
Deadline has reported from their sources that Ace Ventura: Pet Detective star Jim Carrey is in negotiations with Paramount to portray Dr. Robotnik in their Sonic the Hedgehog project. Carrey is perhaps best known for his 1990s comedy roles in such films as The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, but his more recent work in projects like Dark Crimes and Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond have taken more dramatic and experimental forms. Carrey would be set to star opposite previously confirmed cast members James Marsden and Tika Sumpter.
Dr. Robotnik, commonly known as Dr. Eggman for Western audiences, has been the primary antagonist for Sonic the Hedgehog since the series’ first game released in 1991. Other than Sonic being referred to as a “juvenile delinquent” in the film, little is known about the plot, but it can be safe to assume that Robotnik will be up to his usual world-domination or animal-enslavement schemes. Hopefully more casting news is revealed soon, as that would reflect the production’s desire to “gotta go fast.”
