‘Lord of the Rings’ Amazon Series Will Run Five Seasons, Young Aragon Will Only Be Around For One

Amazon LOTR Series

It was recently reported that Amazon Studios fought a tough battle against both HBO and Netflix in order to gain the rights to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, Lord of the Rings. In the end, the company won securing the ability to make a total of five seasons. It was also reported that the show would not be a retelling of the War for the Ring. Instead the series would focus on Tolkien’s Appendices and follow a young Aragorn as he learns his true lineage during his time with the Elves. However while the show may begin with the tale of the future King of Rohan there is a chance that the series won’t always follow his story.

As TheOneRing reports:

From the first press release, we know this so-called #LOTR series will NOT be a retelling of the events of the War of the Ring. Instead, it will be Appendices based and cover a lot of time and history. This is the greatest advantage the show runners have: that so much of Tolkien’s storytelling, even just in ‘Appendix A’, covers a tremendous swath of time. Starting with a young Aragorn, narrative allows connections to his Numenorean bloodline (and to the founding of #Gondor). The fabric of Aragorn’s story is just so rich.”

This indicates that the tale of Aragorn might only be a season’s worth of story. It would appear that Amazon Studios is attempting to use an anthology style in their approach of writing the Lord of the Rings TV series. This would allow them to focus on a wide range of characters and stories from Middle Earth lore such as the story of the One Ring’s creation, the tale of Elendil and Isildur, even learning what Gandalf did between the time of the Hobbit and the War of the Ring. Actor Ian Mckellen has even already expressed quite a bit of interest in reprising his role as the Grey Wizard.

When asked what he thought about another actor taking on the role he became (jokingly) defensive about anybody else playing the character stating:

What do you mean, another Gandalf? I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7,000 years old, so I’m not too old.

It would be interesting to see just how far the Amazon LOTR series goes with the tales they choose to tell. Perhaps fans will see the story of Beren & Lúthien, which served as the inspiration for Aragorn and Arwen later down the road. What kind of tales would you like to see you like to see from the Lord of the Rings TV series?
