The Division Film Signs On Deadpool 2 Director David Leitch

News on Ubisoft’s upcoming The Division film has been rather sparse lately, with the movie having recently taken a back seat to The Division 2, announced by the publisher last month. Now, it appears that we’ve some news regarding the film: Deadpool 2 director David Leitch has been signed on to helm the project, which is set to star Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game).

The news was reported by Variety, which revealed that the director was signed on to helm The Division film just months after it was announced that he would also be directing the “Fast and Furious” spinoff “Hobs and Shaw”, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, respectively. According to sources for Variety, the Fast and Furious spinoff will shoot first, as it is already scheduled to go into production this fall. The current plan is for Leitch to begin working on The Division film at some point in 2019.

The Division film has been without a director ever since it was revealed that Stephen Gaghan was no longer attached to the project, wherein he was set to both write and direct. In his place, David Leitch’s latest works include John Wick, where he also worked as the producer for the film’s sequel. He also worked on Atomic Blonde, starring Charlize Theron.

The Division film is based off of the Ubisoft game by the same name, which released in 2016. In the game, a disease is released that spreads on Black Friday, causing the United States to collapse into disarray within five days. It is unknown at this time how closely the film will follow the events of the game, though hopefully it will include some time within The Dark Zone, the lawless PvP area featuring high risk high reward gameplay.
