The Division Film Adaptation To Be Directed and Written By Stephen Gaghan

The Division Film

Hollywood has continued its efforts to bring the biggest gaming franchises to life on the big screen. We’ve seen the recent casting news for the new Tomb Raider film, and now it looks like another big modern game is getting the big budget film treatment. Tom Clancy is no stranger to having projects with his name on the big screen, so it makes sense that Ubisoft would seek to turn their newest Tom Clancy game into a blockbuster film. The announcement was made last year that the Division film was in the works and would star Jake Gyllenhaal, who would also co-produce the film along with Ubisoft’s Gerard Guillemot. Now it looks like this project has taken another big step forward, as The Division film now officially has a director.

A new report from Variety has shared that Stephen Gaghan will be directing the adaptation that will star Gyllenhaal, as well as Jessica Chastain. Gaghan is perhaps best known as the director of the 2000 film Traffic, for which he won the Academy Award for directing. He also wrote and directed the 2005 Syriana. In response to this new announcement, Gaghan had this to say:

I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring ‘The Division’ to the big screen. They’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks. The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities.”

The film will still share the setting of a dystopian New York overrun with a smallpox pandemic that the game took place in, and there is currently no set release date for the film. Hopefully, our world does not reach a biohazardous pandemic before then. What do you guys think? Are you happy to see The Division film adaptation find a director?
