Sea of Thieves Death Cost Arriving With Future Update
Despite encountering a few bumps along the road, Rare’s shared-world pirating adventure has certainly been a hit since launching earlier this week. With over 1 million players taking to the seas, of course, it would be difficult to imagine things going exactly the way the developers imagined. That being said, the studio has already released some details on what’s to come, including a Sea of Thieves death cost.
Having to fork over a bit of in-game currency upon dying is nothing new, but when Sea of Thieves set sail, it was without the feature. Sure, you’d probably miss out on some sweet treasure and a bit of time, but other than that, nothing was deducted from players when they perished. According to Rare, however, that’s about to change as they intend on introducing the feature in a future update. Here’s what they said:
This new feature has the Captain of the Ferry of the Damned deduct a small gold fee when you die. Rates are dependent on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!”
As many of you who have played the game already know, when you die, your character is transported to the Ferry of the Damned. After hanging out there for a few seconds, a portal opens up that brings you back to the realm of the living at no additional cost. Board your trusty vessel once more and set a course for adventure! Unfortunately, that will no longer be the case when the feature is added.
Luckily, the Sea of Thieves death cost won’t be all bad. Rare stated that they “never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience.” As for the difference in price, that’ll depend on what sort of shenanigans you have gotten yourself into. For example, dying as a result of trying to punch a shark may come at a higher cost than encountering a group of skeletons armed with pistols and fighting valiantly until the very end.
Sea of Thieves is currently available on PC and Xbox One. No word was provided as to when the update will arrive with this feature, but keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as we learn more. For other gaming news going on right now, check out the following:
