GoldenEye 007 Remastered Announced, Coming To Xbox Game Pass

GoldenEye 007 Remastered

The rumors were true! Fondly remembered as one of the most influential games for the Nintendo 64 era, the iconic GoldenEye 007 is now officially coming back to modern hardware with a remastered coat of paint. Based on the Pierce Brosnan-led James Bond movie of the same name, the classic Rare-developed first-person shooter is currently confirmed to re-release for Xbox systems sometime soon and is also expected to be added to Xbox Game Pass upon day one of release.

As announced in a Twitter post from developer Rare, GoldenEye 007 Remastered is indeed officially happening, with the retro party shooter being “faithfully recreated” from its N64 heyday. In addition, the remaster will also include new modern touches such as Achievement support, smoother framerates, as well as crisp 4K resolutions. Plus, as the house of Halo understandably has to confirm these kinds of things now, GoldenEye’s famous split-screen multiplayer is also set to return for the awaited comeback. An accompanying trailer teasing the experience can be viewed below.

The rights regarding GoldenEye 007 have been notoriously tied up with several notable parties, including Microsoft, Nintendo, and James Bond license holder Danjaq LLC., making this announcement nothing short of miraculous in a legal sense. It’s not known whether PlayStation or PC may also be included in the mix, but it doesn’t look likely, especially for Sony’s hardware. As the main promotional image for GoldenEye 007 Remastered bears a logo for Rare Replay, a compilation published by Microsoft, this re-release may only be available for Xbox consoles, at least for the time being.

Though the remaster is only slated for Xboxes, it appears Nintendo is opting to flex its ownership of the GoldenEye 007 license as well. Big N is bringing the original game (polygonal visuals and all) into the Nintendo Switch Online service, officially joining its growing library of Nintendo 64 titles sometime in the future. While little was said regarding a release date or extra features, online play was confirmed to be included with the eventual Nintendo Switch version. This marks Microsoft’s second collaboration with NSO, having previously opened the doors for Banjo-Kazooie on the service.
