Nintendo’s iconic handheld Gameboy system has seen many different iterations over the years, many of which have simply gotten bigger and better over time. Now, a new version of the popular console is getting shrunk down to a keychain-sized device that is capable of more than just Gameboy games. Enter the PocketSprite, blending classic retro games with modern-age tech to create something wonderful.

Designed by Jeroen Domburg and partnered with manufacturer Steven K., the PocketSprite is a fully crowdfunded Gameboy-inspired device that also happens to work as the best keychain, ever. The PocketSprite features tons of built-in emulators, enabling the device to play Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Game Gear, Sega Master games, and tons more. As it is open source, savvy coders can likely get tons of additional games onto the device, with some work.

While the PocketSprite is touted as a device that can play tons of old games, it also features plenty of modern-age features. The device has an OLED screen, a built-in speaker, and a rechargeable battery (Micro USB). It also has Bluetooth (Low Energy) and Wi-Fi capabilities. inside the device is a dual-core 240MHz ESP32 chip with 520 KB of RAM.

Those looking to purchase their own PocketSprite can do so on the device’s Crowd Supply page. The PocketSprite can be purchased fully assembled for $55, though the Hacker Edition is also available for the same price, those looking to assemble the device themselves. A ‘Deluxe Edition’ of the PocketSprite is also available for purchase, which features a machined aerospace-grade aluminium case and quartz screen protector. The Deluxe Edition costs $199, and at the time of writing only 23 of the available 200 units have been claimed.
