Xbox Director Promises Keyboard and Mouse Support for Xbox One is Still Happening

Microsoft has been making a lot of moves recently within the gaming world, including pushing for cross-play with the Nintendo Switch and PC. Among the changes to the Xbox-verse promised is that of keyboard and mouse support for the Microsoft console. With news on when that change would be implemented slowed down, Xbox director Mike Ybarra gave a little clarity for their players.

Ybarra took the stage during a panel at PAX West this weekend and took the chance to assure fans that keyboard and mouse support was “definitely coming”. In addition to talking about the change in accessibility, Yabbra also made mention that he is aware of “concern” that players have voiced about mouse and keyboard support giving an unfair player advantage in multiplayer games, namingly in the FPS (First Person Shooter) genre:

We have to be very smart in how we do that. We’ll leave it a lot up to developer choice. A lot of people tweet me and say, ‘You can’t do this because of fairness,’ and we understand that. We run two platforms; the Windows platform and the Xbox platform.”

In an effort to smartly go about effecting this change, Microsoft is dedicated to coaching developers looking to integrate this change on how to fairly make this adjustment to player availability. Ybarra mentioned that one way they are looking at this is to give players on the Xbox the option to queue up with controller users, or those utilizing the keyboard and mouse support.

So you’ll see our first games supporting keyboard and mouse soon; I can’t announce what that is, but soon. And then, based on developer interest, they’ll choose to do keyboard and mouse going forward, or not.”
