Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corporation Opens Up a Skincare Clinic in Vietnam
It’s definitely not the Umbrella Corporation (or is it), but the logo for this skincare clinic certainly turned some heads and it’s no farce. As some of you may know, the Umbrella Corporation is a fictional pharmaceutical and medical equipment company in Resident Evil. However, underneath that clever disguise is an operational bio-genetic engineering facility that eventually brought upon a plague of zombies and mutants. Essentially, they’re the big bad guys in the franchise.
First revealed by Geek Culture, images of Medcare Skin Centre started popping up and gaining a lot of traction and attention – take a look at them above. Even Reddit is joining in on the laughs. Undoubtedly, a lot of jokes accompanied them including some knee slapping puns and punchlines. Zombifying the population of Vietnam one bottle of skin cream at a time, am I right? The official site and location for Medcare Skin Centre opened up in April, according to the About Me section. Seeing as the business is quite new to the scene, the news of this design mishap made it back to them quickly, even addressing the unfortunate design problem with an apology on Facebook:
Ho Chi Minh City – Jun, 5th, 2017
Dear Clients and Partners of Medcare Skin Centre and others of concern;
In the last few days, we have received feedback from the media and community that our logo resembles that of a fictional corporation (Umbrella Corporation) in the movie and game Resident Evil. We are very surprised to receive such feedback from the community.
We are very sorry the situation has occurred and is working internally to find the best solution quickly. Our team is highly specialized in taking care of skin conditions for our clients and logo design is completely out of our specialty and was consulted and completed for us by a hired third-party. We understand the urgency of the situation; and is working to quickly to provide appropriate answer to our clients, partners, community and to the movie and game producers and copyright holders of the artwork. We hope for your understanding that the situation is not an intentional infringement of copyright by Medcare Skin Centre.
We will continually update our progress on the website and social media presence. In the meantime, we will be monitoring continual feedback from the community in this email should you have any sharing with Medcare Skin Centre: [email protected]
Once again, we are very sorry and look forward to your understanding and support.
Sincerely,Medcare Skin Centre”
It seems that the association with an illegal bio-genetic engineering operation, albeit fictional, isn’t what they were hoping for, but it certainly made for interesting headlines. To answer the mulling question you probably have – yes, this is an actual skincare clinic that specializes in the treatment of dermatological conditions and diseases. Unless the fictional Capcom universe of Resident Evil has made its way into this one, there’s no chance of Umbrella Corporation pulling the strings here.
Could it be possible that the graphic designer for Medcare Skin Centre was a fan of the horror franchise? That is a fair possibility. There’s also the idea that this entire situation was a grand PR scheme from Capcom and, if so, the geniuses are probably rubbing their palms and cackling with glee. On the other hand, the third party company that was hired to create Medcare’s logo may have screwed up – big time. Then again, coincidences happen, right?
