Fallout 4 Mod ‘Sim Settlements’ Allows Players to Micromanage Less and Explore More
In the vanilla version of Bethesda’s Fallout 4, players experience the joy of construction and creating something of a home for themselves and their settlers. The only problem there is that it requires a lot of time and tedious effort to finish the multiple settlements and assign NPCs to different jobs. That being said, the micromanaging isn’t for everyone. Luckily, a new Fallout 4 mod called ‘Sim Settlements’ allows for the players to get the Settlers to build their own homes.
Mods are a way to make the game fresh and interesting, some are visual or audio improvements, others make characters and weapons you wouldn’t normally find in the game. There have even been whole new stories and playable areas created to fluff up the game. In this case, the Fallout 4 mod by kinggath aims to fix the Settlement system.
One of the biggest problems with Fallout 4, is just how disconnected the Settlement system feels from the rest of the game. Settlements lack that Bethesda game feel of exploration and progression, and so there’s not much incentive to actually use the system.
It also feels bizarre that you have to micromanage all these people, and personally plant seeds and decide where people sleep – you’re their leader, not their mother! You’re supplying these people with security and tons of resources, why can’t they kick in and help out with building up the city?
If kinggath’s issue with the settlement system rings true or it just sounds interesting, you can check out the mod here. Essentially, what the mod tries to do is incorporate a bit of a Sim City type system into the game. Just like with Sim City, players will place a plot down instead of a building piece. These plots, once assigned to a settler, will be built up over time and will also require the player to meet specific needs. Of course the needs are similar to that of the vanilla game but with the Fallout 4 mod, it becomes more dynamic. Each building will require needs as opposed as a general whole like the vanilla version, requiring the player to be more involved. These needs can also change over time, making the gameplay more challenging.
That’s not all the mod entails either. The NPCs will belong to something kinggath calls a living city. They won’t all be just “Settler’ with boring, bland backstory. No, these NPCs will have different backstories, hobbies, likes/dislikes, etc. This will influence the way a settler builds to add a little bit of flavor to each plot. They’ll also pay taxes, so it’s worth something aside from the satisfaction of seeing the growth of your settlements. Plans are being made for future content in the mod including unique shops and jobs not seen in the basic version of the game, hundreds of building models, multi-unit buildings, and more. Sadly, the mod is not available on the Xbox One at the moment, but it’s in the works.
