Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fan translation

It has been three days since the release of the latest Legend of Zelda title and fans have been diving into the open world adventure with wild abandon. Among the enthusiastic exploration are fans trying to dig deeper into the secrets of Hyrule. It is no surprise, then, that a Breath of the Wild fan translation has emerged detailing the Sheikah language and a hidden message.

Before we delve into what was unearthed in the Legend of Zelda fan translation, we would like to take a moment to warn you that some mild spoilers lie ahead. If you want to find the secrets for yourself, you may want to cover your eyes for this next part. We’ll tell you when you can peek. Now, without further adieu, here are the details!

An image hit Reddit yesterday from user sparkthedarkness showing the symbols that comprise the Sheikah language in Breath of the Wild. The image also contains a full translation of the entire alphabet, including punctuation, spacing, and numbers. Granted, this is pretty interesting on its own but the remarkable part is what happened once the information was released. As is often the case with Reddit, fans began to use the information to translate all sorts of things in the game, revealing locations, how to use items, and a hidden message. This is where that Breath of the Wild fan translation comes into play.

User CompC took the image and applied the translation method to the Breath of the Wild special edition box that has Sheikah writing on it. What does it say? Well according to the Legend of Zelda fan translation, the phrase repeats “The Hyrule Fantasy”. If you’re unfamiliar, this was the name of the Original Legend of Zelda game in Japan.

What does this imply? Well, Redditors have been discussing just that. Some believe it means this is a reimagining of the first game, which lacked the scope and depth of Breath of the Wild. It could also be that this signifies a return to the roots of the difficult, open-ended gameplay of the classic. This has certainly been mentioned before.

Adding fuel to the theories is the fact that Nintendo revealed a 2D prototype of the ideas in Breath of the Wild at GDC. To be honest, the prototype shares a lot of similarities with the original Legend of Zelda game. It is, however, just as likely that it’s only a nod to dedicated fans that took the time to translate the message and are knowledgeable about the franchise. Regardless, it is an interesting find and we’re sure there will be more surprises ahead as fans continue to explore the massive expanse of Hyrule in Breath of the Wild.

Okay, you can peek now. What do you think of the hidden message? Do you think this Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fan translation carries any weight, or is it just a simple Easter egg? Join in on the conversation in the comment section below or start your own on our Disqus!
