Is Benicio del Toro Playing Rey’s Father In Star Wars Episode VIII?
Since the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans of the beloved franchise have been speculating on a multitude of mysteries as the film has posed more questions than answers. Theories have run rampant regarding key characters and events from a galaxy far, far away: what exactly went down at Luke’s Jedi academy, who is supreme leader Snoke, and perhaps most importantly, who are Rey’s parents? Today, we’ll be taking a look at the latest theory surrounding Rey’s lineage and as you’ve guessed it already, it has much to do with Benicio del Toro and what his role in Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Last Jedi might be.
In order to understand this latest theory, we must assume that del Toro will be portraying Rebel’s Ezra Bridger. For those of you who might not be familiar with the character, Ezra is a young Jedi padawan and the main protagonist in Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels animated show. The show is set two to five years before the original trilogy with backstory steaming back from the end of Revenge of The Sith. Keeping the previously mentioned in mind, the theory goes as follows:
Ezra at the conclusion of Rebels joins Luke Skywalker’s Jedi academy and shortly after turns to the dark side. At this point he began to manipulate Luke other students into following in his footsteps, including Ben Solo. Luke somehow sensing the events that were to occur, spirits Ezra’s daughter, Rey, away to Jakku. Rey being the product of a romance between Ezra and Sabine (a Mandalorian warrior), also a series regular on Rebels.
This theory, as with almost all Episode VIII theories, is not without its holes, and we doubt that the folks over at Lucasfilm would greenlight a major story arc that is very convoluted and would rely heavily on the viewer being familiar with the Star Wars Rebels TV show. The story group at Lucasfilm has said in the past that the tie-ins between the films, comics, books, and tv shows would only serve to add more substance and connective tissue so to speak within the Star Wars universe, but will not be required viewing/reading for those fans who are only into the main franchise . Simply put, if you don’t keep up with the books, comics, and TV shows, then you’ll still be able to watch the main saga films and be able to understand and follow the plot. As someone who is utterly obsessed with the continuing space opera that is Star Wars and follows all of the content available, I can say that it makes the experience of the franchise more immersive. As a fan, it’s nice to get my fix of the Star Wars universe in between the movies. With that being said, even if the theory holds partial weight, Benicio del Toro would make a pretty interesting adult Ezra. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th!
