As the streaming wars wage on with more competitors and ever, the companies with the biggest budgets are putting their financial reserves to good work creating flashy content. Netflix has found much success with their Stranger Things and Witcher series, as has Disney Plus with their original series The Mandalorian and Loki. Amazon has found some footing for the Prime Video streaming service with their series The Boys, but the streamer’s biggest push to compete with rivals is clearly going to be their upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series. Now, Amazon has announced the release date for this big-budget series.

A report from Variety has disclosed new information about the upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series from Amazon. As filming on the first season of the series has now officially wrapped in New Zealand, as of August 2nd, Amazon has announced that the series will be set to premiere on September 2nd, 2022. Amazon’s Head of Studios, Jennifer Salke, shared the release date, along with the following statement regarding the project:

“I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth! Our talented producers, cast, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”

The cast members confirmed so far for the new Lord of the Rings TV series include Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Charles Edwards, and Trystan Gravelle Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Sir Lenny Henry. Little is known about the series’s plot so far, other than it being set during the Second Age of Middle Earth, thousands of years before The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, and that it might feature a young Aragorn for one season. Whatever the other Tolkien elements that are to be featured, with Amazon spending nearly half a billion dollars on this new series, it is surely going to be as exciting to witness as a day trip to Mordor.
