Following the game’s relatively recent unveiling at E3 2021, Ubisoft has officially delayed Rainbow Six Extraction into next year. The development team announced the shift in a blog post, moving the original September release to sometime in January 2022. While no specific reasoning was cited, the developer assured they were “embracing the opportunity” to bring players the intended “immersive, cooperative, and thrilling experience” in “the way it deserves.”

“Our ambition with Rainbow Six Extraction is to deliver a full-fledged AAA experience that changes the way you play and think about cooperative games. With unique features like Missing In Action or The Sprawl, every mission is set to be a tense and challenging experience in which you’ll lead the elite operators of Rainbow Six in a fight against a lethal and evolving alien threat.”

Originally going by the name of Rainbow Six Quarantine, the Ubisoft Montreal-developed title is no stranger to change, even as the game’s offerings take the tactical shooter in a new direction. Fighting the outbreak of horrific alien parasites, players will have access to 18 playable Operators at launch, with each being part of the game’s elite Rainbow Exogenous Analysis and Containment Team (REACT). Ubisoft has spent the last month showing off these new Operators, from the explosive-adjacent Ela to the stealth-based Vigil.

More information about Rainbow Six Extraction, including some eventual release details, was teased to be unveiled “very soon” by Ubisoft. This latest delay marks only the latest of several high-profile delays occurring in the last week alone, with Resident Evil Village‘s oft-postponed multiplayer component, Tango Gameworks’ “spooky” action-adventure Ghostwire: Tokyo, and the martial arts-themed Sifu also getting a new 2022 release window. Each delay was cited as being due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a likely reason why Extraction was delayed as well.

Rainbow Six Extraction releases for PC, Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in January 2022.
