Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft (North America) released a new video showing off some of the incredible capabilities of the new generation game engine they’re using for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Slated for release sometime next year, the game is a first person, action-adventure game with open world exploration.

To adequately capture the rich detail, scale, and diversity of Pandora, the team at Massive Entertainment had to make some “major upgrades and big improvements” to the Snowdrop engine. In the video showcase for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, developers go into detail the features and systems in place to fully capture the wonder of this wonderous world. Check it out:

“With ray tracing, we can illuminate Pandora in a way we never could before,” said senior technical artist Kunal Luthra, explaining one of the most eye-catching capabilities of the latest Snowdrop engine for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. “This way, we can have real light reflect from the emission and the bioluminescence coming out from the plants, making Pandora more vibrant and more realistic.”

In Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, players will “embark on a journey across the Western Frontier” as Na’vi. Explore areas yet to be explored as the environment in an immersive, open world with exotic creatures, new characters, and face the RDA (Resources Development Administration) that continues to threaten the balance of life on Pandora.

Avatar: Frontier of Pandora is slated for release in 2022 for PC, Stadia, Luna, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
