Naughty Dog seems to be at the top of their game, so to speak, in the gaming industry and wider media landscape. Their release of The Last of Us Part II was one of the most successful titles last year, both critically and financially, and they are helping bring The Last of Us to live-action for an HBO series. Many have wondered what the future holds for the fan-favorite developer, with several mystery titles reportedly in the works. Now, it appears that The Last of Us 3 plot has already been outlined by creative director Neil Druckmann for Naughty Dog.

As reported by Game Informer, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann recently appeared on an episode of the Script Apart podcast. After acknowledging the high success for The Last of Us Part II, the future of the series also came up. While Druckmann was initially hesitant to comment, he eventually states that Halley Gross and he have already written an outline for the next chapter in the series. While they do not have any initial intention of making that game, they hope to see that story be told some day. As Druckmann further comments:

We’ve now had two games that I feel speak to something universal as well as telling a very personal story for these characters. With one game, there’s no pattern of what a franchise is. With two games, now there’s starting to be a pattern – now I feel like there are some structural and thematic themes you’d have to stick to if you’re making a third game.”

With seven years having passed between the releases of the first two Last of Us games, Naughty Dog would likely not see a third game in the series released any time soon. With Naughty Dog also supposedly working on other games in the meantime, this gives them plenty of time to refine Druckmann and Gross’s outline for The Last of Us 3 plot into the best possible continuation for the story. Like a spore slowly turning into a clicker, writing is a process that takes time.
