Dungeons & Dragons AAA Open-World RPG In The Works

Dungeons & Dragons

The Dungeons & Dragons series has thrived in recent years in the form of an exceedingly popular and ever-changing tabletop experience, but the die-rolling venturing has also seen quite a few adaptations elsewhere such as live performances, movie/TV adaptations, as well as countless forays into the video game realm. It appears that the wide-spanning fantasy franchise is set to get another role-playing video game from developer Hidden Path Entertainment.

The new project was unveiled in a recent job listing, with Hidden Path confirming work on “a AAA, third-person, open-world fantasy RPG” set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. A corresponding post shows the studio is currently seeking out a Graphics Programmer, Lead Graphics Programmer, Senior Technical Artist, and Writer, featuring references to Unreal Engine 4 as well as “combat, magic, destruction, weather, and environmental effects.”

With the tower-defense Defense Grid games and fantasy-based platformer Witchblood under its belt, Hidden Path isn’t exactly known for crafting in the open-world RPG genre, let alone set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, so this kind of AAA experience would represent an entirely fresh direction for the studio. As this project is very obviously early days, it might be a while before a proper look at this new game might finally be revealed.

As of late, quite a few adaptations based on Dungeons & Dragons lore have been announced as of late, with at least seven different video games in the works alone. While there are the obvious likes of Baldur’s Gate 3 currently in the throes of early access, fans also have the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance which is set to bring its admittedly punishing action RPG stylings to PC and consoles later this year.

What do you think? Are you excited about what Hidden Path may have to offer a AAA Dungeons & Dragons RPG, or are you fine with just enjoying Baldur’s Gate 3 for the time being?
