Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes Reportedly Happening At Nintendo

The Pokémon series is making some big strides on the Nintendo Switch, but as impressive as they are, fans of the franchise nonetheless venture back to games of past generations, not only for a nostalgic adventure but also for the oodles of Pokémon exclusive to certain entries. Leaning into demand, Nintendo has released several remakes from its mainline Poke-library, from the original Red and Green to more recently with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Now, according to a recent report, a Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remake may also be in the works.

As per a recent report from Centro Pokémon (via VGC), Diamond and Pearl indeed seem to be happening, with an announcement reportedly planned to take place sometime in February. Disclosed by “sources close to the company,” the Nintendo Switch release is said to retain the games’ classic gameplay – unlike the Pokémon Let’s Go games – and is currently aiming for a 2021 launch in time for the series’ 25th anniversary.

Adding to the validity of this report was the discovery of an apparent website domain for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Before being removed (archived here), Centro Pokémon noted the URL for “diamondpearl.pokemon.com” returned a 403 error for visitors, suggesting that while the site had no viewable content, it was being reserved by Nintendo in some shape or form. For comparison’s sake, a quick look at other would-be Poké-sites such as Ruby and Sapphire currently turns up a blank, unresolved page.

Originally releasing back in 2006 for the Nintendo DS, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl represented the series’ first appearance on the classic handheld, bringing with it a myriad of innovative features such as online battles and connectivity to past games. As all prior games in the series have already recived a remake, it’s no surprise that Nintendo may next be working on Diamond and Pearl. If this report comes to pass, it’ll be interesting to see how the games might be adapted considering how far modern games have come.
