Sony has had quite the mess on its hands these past few days. Following an impressive PlayStation 5 showcase this past Wednesday, the company managed to take some of its lead and yeet it out the nearest window by casting doubt on whether or not Demon’s Souls Remake and Final Fantasy XVI will be coming to other platforms. On top of this, pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 is a hot mess, with many retailers either opening its pre-orders early or late due to a serious lack of coordination on Sony’s part. If that’s not enough to throw the future of the PS5 into question, it’s now been revealed that Sony’s next-gen console won’t be backwards compatible with PS1, PS2, or PS3 games.

The news comes by way of a recent interview with Famitsu, wherein Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the PS5 won’ have backwards compatibility past the PS4. “We keep in mind the engineering specialized for the PS5, as we produced the device,” Ryan said. “In the midst of that, the PS4 already has 100 million players; we thought they ought to want to play PS4 titles on the PS5 as well indeed, so we included compatibility with the PS4.”

While implementing that, we also focused our efforts on taking in the high-speed SSD and the new controller DualSense at the same time. So, unfortunately, we could not achieve compatibility with those formats.”

Just last month, Ubisoft updated a support page and confirmed that the PS5 would only contain backwards compatibility for PS4 titles. Jim Ryan’s new statement drives the last nail into that proverbial coffin, which is unfortunate for gamers – like myself – that wish to play their older games without digging a dusty aged console out of a closet. There were backwards compatibility-related patents aplenty in the past couple of years that pointed towards the possibility of such a thing happening for PS1-PS3 games, but alas, that dream appears to have fallen through.

The PlayStation 5 is slated to release on November 12th, with a global release set for November 19th.
