SEGA Wants More Classic Re-Releases On Nintendo Switch

Not many game publishers can claim the legacy and longevity of SEGA, a fact surely owed to its stunning library of franchises. While long out of the business of creating consoles (at least not new ones), the company has shown an enthusiasm for bringing its massive array of classic games to modern audiences with projects such as with the SEGA Ages series. Responsible for bringing quite a few favorites to the Nintendo Switch in recent years, the Ages series was recently revealed to be ceasing operations after porting 19 titles to the system.

While the SEGA Ages brand is ended for the time being, it appears the company is still interested in porting classics to the Switch. According to a recent interview with Game Watch (via Nintendo Everything), SEGA producer Yosuke Okunari assured that while no plans currently exist for the Nintendo console, it may not spell the end for retro releases on the Switch. “Some may be wondering if we have plans to continue re-releasing past titles on Nintendo Switch – I want that to happen,” Okunari expressed. “I hope to bring something over that will really satisfy Switch players. So until then, we hope you’ll look forward to it.”

SEGA Ages is set to conclude with the Switch release of Herzog Zwei, an ambitious mech RTS game first released for the Genesis in 1989. Following this, developer M2 will be preoccupied with their “next project” for the foreseeable future. While this new endeavor certainly takes priority, studio director Tsuyoshi Matsuoka expressed both a company-wide as well as a personal ambition to continue working on retro SEGA ports in the future. “For us at M2, there are still a lot of other titles we want to port over as well,” Matsuoka added. “Personally speaking, I want to re-release SEGA’s entire history of interactive games!”

SEGA Ages: Herzog Zwei releases today in Japan, with a release in the West expected to happen relatively soon.
