There’s certainly more hype than ever for the next generation of consoles, especially with new details being released relatively frequently ahead of release. However, the classics continue to stay classic for a reason and companies have attempted to cash-in on this retro nostalgia through various means, whether it be through re-releases, remakes, or scaled-down microconsoles. Revealed late last year, hardware maker Analogue unveiled a gloriously sleek and featureful spin on handhelds called the Analogue Pocket, blending old school and new with enhanced support for Nintendo’s Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges.

With anticipation unsurprisingly high, it appears enthusiasts may actually have a difficult time getting their hands on the Game Boy-like device as pre-orders have sold out only minutes after initially going live. Officially opening the flood gates on August 3rd at 8 a.m. PT, pre-purchases for the Pocket were officially declared “sold out” on social media a mere 15 minutes later. Though this news is disappointing for hopeful fans, the company promised they are currently in the midst of “producing more” and will attempt to “meet demand during this unfortunate global state of affairs,” referencing the challenges raised by the still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

From the get-go, Analogue established the Pocket as an arguable must-have for retro games, touting premium features not often found in throwback devices. Not only does the hardware include a Gorilla Glass-protected 1600 x 1440 LCD display, up to 10 hours of battery life, and mappable buttons, but it also features support for third-party controllers, 4-player multiplayer, as well as HDMI output for televisions/monitors. Add-on accessories offer even more functionality, including a vertical dock; cartridge adapters for SEGA Game Gear, Atari Lynx, and NeoGeo Pocket; and MIDI integration for the digital music creation software Nanoloop.

Though pre-orders are sold out, there’s still plenty of time left to refill, as the Analogue Pocket is on track to release in May 2021.
