In June 2013, Microsoft released a video announcing Project Scorpio and all the promises that will be coming with the next best thing in console gaming. ‘No compromises’ was the promise and only the best in resolution and graphics – especially emphasized since the news has broken to the public is true 4k resolution. Other than very definitive, yet limited, information on hardware specification, not much else has been revealed. That being said, the pledge of 6 Teraflops of power, 320 gigabytes of memory, and 8 CPU cores is huge for console. It will be able to render at 60 Hz and “fully render uncompressed pixels,” according to the video announcement made in July 2016 seen here. Even Studio Wildcard’s Co-Founder and Lead Programmer, Jeremy Stieglitz, is talking about the potential of virtual reality on Project Scorpio.

Stieglitz suggested the possibility of virtual reality support on the new console during his interview with Daily Express:

It looks plenty powerful enough [for VR] to support it and have it look really good, it’s just a matter of getting our hands on the console and seeing what we can achieve with it.

Stieglitz continued explaining their experimental stage with virtual reality, but that it is, indeed, their end goal. “And whatever Microsoft are doing with The Scorpio [sic] is a little further out, but it’s definitely going to be on our radar when we get a development unit to start working with,” he said. “It’s quite basic and is something us [sic] to gather feedback to help us work out what to do with it. It’s there for the Oculus Rift and we’re hoping to do something a little different with the Vive.”

It isn’t clear whether or not Project Scorpio will support VR, but it seems like a very reasonable direction considering where gaming is headed. Based on Stieglitz’ comment, it sounds as though Microsoft will be utilizing the HTC Vive. Which doesn’t quite make sense, considering a Oculus Rift and Xbox have had prior relations and has an ongoing partnership with them as well. Either way, Stieglitz seems positive about Project Scorpio’s possibility for virtual reality capabilities.
