Xbox Needs To Focus More On RPGs, Says Phil Spencer

Like all current-day consoles, the Xbox One has its fair share of strengths and weaknesses. While Microsoft’s line of consoles have always leaned towards the action and shooter genres, this has subsequently led to RPGs not having a particular strong presence throughout most of the company’s line of home consoles. That said, it looks like Microsoft has every intention of giving the RPG its due moving forward.

Following the recent festivities that took place at X019, Xbox boss Phil Spencer sat down with Xbox UK to discuss the console line’s strengths and weaknesses thus far, and what the plan is moving forward. “Obviously first-person and third-person shooters have been strong, but it’s nice with Outer Worlds coming out, Wasteland…,” Spencer began. “I think RPG is an area that we purposefully focused on and wanted to do more. ”

But it’s also, as we’re watching Xbox Game Pass grow and grow, we’re seeing more genres enter, and whether it’s genres that used to be popular and coming back or creators trying new things because they have an audience that’s always there and they can think how to deliver stories to those people… But I do think RPG is an area that we should focus and I think X0 will be fun around that news as well.”

Whether or not Microsoft fully commits to this endeavor remains to be seen, though with the recent acquisition of game developer Obsidian Entertainment and the studio’s release of The Outer Worlds, Microsoft certainly appears to be on the right track.
